WHAT IS TOURISM AND TOURISM DEVELOPMENT?
1. TOURISM is the movement of people from their origin to a destination for reasons of leisure, to visit friends or relatives or for business. It can be studied by researching such things as numbers of people visiting a destination, how much they spend, their ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status and age or a combination of these i.e. what activities do young people like to do versus older people or people from what countries spend the most money?
2. TOURISM DEVELOPMENT can be broken into two parts.
i. People develop attractions or accommodation in response to people visiting an area i.e. people visit a beach so a motel
or hotel is built to accommodate them.
ii People develop attractions, accommodation, infrastructure etc. to attract people to an area thus boosting an area's
economy e.g. Theme Parks are built to attract tourists.
